Iamgold Delays Côté Gold Expansion, Evaluates Increased Capacity for Future Growth

Iamgold defers its planned expansion of Côté Gold to explore a more significant project capable of processing 70,000 tonnes daily, amid rising gold prices.

Iamgold (TSX: IMG)(NYSE: IAG) has decided to postpone its planned Côté Gold expansion while it considers a much more ambitious project that could boost the Ontario mine's processing capacity to 70,000 tonnes per day. Previously, Iamgold anticipated upgrading the current processing rate from 36,000 tonnes per day to a range of 50,000 to 55,000 tonnes. However, the company now plans to first enhance the existing plant's capacity toward 40,000 tonnes and has deferred investments estimated between $500 million and $750 million (C$700 million-C$1 billion) associated with the initial expansion.

Côté, located about 500 kilometers north of Toronto, is predominantly owned by Iamgold, which holds a 70% stake, while Sumitomo Metal Mining (TYO: 5713) owns the remaining 30%. CEO Renaud Adams highlighted during a conference call with financial analysts that the modification in plans reflects the significant opportunity presented by Côté.

This strategic reassessment aligns with the current market, where elevated gold prices are enhancing cash flows across the mining sector, enabling larger companies to allocate more funds for expansions while simultaneously increasing shareholder returns. Rivals like Newmont (NYSE: NEM), Agnico Eagle Mines (TSX, NYSE: AEM), and Kinross Gold (TSX: K; NYSE: KGC) have recently reported improved free cash flows while maintaining annual production guidance.

Revised Expansion Strategy

Iamgold plans to release a comprehensive updated mine plan by the end of the year that integrates both the Côté and the adjacent Gosselin deposits. The upcoming report is expected to reveal a larger reserve base and a prolonged mine life, alongside outlining the necessary upgrades to sustain a processing rate of approximately 40,000 tonnes per day. Furthermore, it will investigate the feasibility of larger expansion scenarios.

A target processing rate of 70,000 tonnes would necessitate a shift in mining operations for both deposits. At processing rates of 36,000 to 40,000 tonnes daily, Iamgold can deplete Côté longer before heavily tapping into Gosselin, according to Adams. However, a jump to 70,000 tonnes would require earlier development of both areas.

The more extensive expansion plan won’t significantly alter immediate work schedules over the next two to three years. Iamgold intends to extend the pit, enhance mining capacity, reduce costs, and increase throughput before committing to another major build-out. Management had previously estimated initiating the 50,000-tonne expansion around 2029 or 2030.

Côté produced 96,200 ounces of gold during the second quarter ending June 30, with Iamgold attributing 67,300 ounces to itself. In June, the plant processed over 1 million tonnes following the installation of a new conveyor belt and commissioning of a second cone crusher.

This year, Côté is projected to yield between 390,000 and 440,000 ounces of gold on a 100% basis.

Resource Assessment

A resource update in March indicated that Côté and Gosselin's jointly assessed 838 million measured and indicated tonnes graded at 0.75 grams of gold per tonne, translating to 20.3 million contained ounces. Additionally, another 177.1 million tonnes graded at 0.61 gram yield 3.48 million inferred ounces.

The measured and indicated ounces saw a 12% uptick from the year-end estimates, attributed not solely to drilling but also due to an increase in the gold price model from US$2,100 to US$2,500 per ounce, alongside reducing the minimum resource grade from 0.30 gram to 0.25 gram. Iamgold commented that these adjustments played a significant role in the enhanced resource figures.

Currently, Gosselin comprises 310.9 million indicated tonnes at a grade of 0.74 grams per tonne, yielding 7.43 million ounces, plus 41.4 million inferred tonnes at 0.67 gram, equating to 890,000 ounces. The upcoming project plans aim to convert a portion of this resource into reserves as Gosselin becomes part of the operational strategy.

Infrastructure Considerations

The envisioned larger operation will demand increased waste and tailings storage facilities. Côté’s current tailings pond can accommodate approximately 233 million tonnes; however, integrating Gosselin will necessitate expanded capacity, as noted by Chief Operating Officer Bruno Lemelin.

Iamgold is exploring options for the enhancement of the storage areas and potentially utilizing mined-out portions of the Côté pit for waste and tailings. Management intends to utilize the next couple of years to advance environmental assessments and obtain necessary permits while finalizing the larger mine design.

Financial Position

Iamgold's decision comes amidst a fortified financial position. By the end of June, the company reported $501 million in cash, no debt under its revolving credit facility, and around $1.35 billion in available liquidity. In the second quarter, Iamgold’s mining operations generated $369 million in free cash flow.

Such financial stability provides Iamgold the flexibility to enhance the existing Côté operation while postponing significant capital expenditures until management finalizes its vision for the Côté-Gosselin project.

For the second quarter, Iamgold recorded adjusted net earnings of $241.6 million, or 42 cents per share, a substantial rise compared to $77.3 million, or 13 cents per share, from the previous year. The company has upheld its full-year production forecast at 720,000 to 820,000 attributable ounces, with all-in sustaining costs projected at $2,000-$2,150 per ounce, inclusive of royalties and capital expenditures approaching $500 million.

Costs have been elevated this year, with first-half all-in sustaining expenses averaging $2,195 per ounce, exceeding the anticipated annual range. However, Iamgold anticipates reduced costs in the latter half of the year as production ramps up at Côté.
